This summer, Church educators from across the US and Canada are invited to participate in a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Formation Course, held at St John the Evangelist Orthodox Church in Tempe, AZ from July 5-11th, 2017.
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a distinctive, yet proven, Montessori–based method of Christian education that recognizes and reinforces the child’s natural desire for learning about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ's love for them and for all of His creation. Rooted in Scripture and the Divine Liturgy, this hands-on, experiential approach enables children to fall more deeply in love with the Good Shepherd and allows them to more fully participate in the liturgy. Examples of lessons include presentations of the articles of the altar, the articles of baptism, the parable of the Good Shepherd and the Gospel narratives of the birth of Christ, all utilizing child-sized materials that are appropriate for the developmental stage of the child.
We have the unique opportunity to welcome Shelley Finkler from Alaska to teach this course to Orthodox adults who will then implement this method in their parishes. Shelley has served as a catechist with CGS since 2007. She started the second Orthodox CGS program in the U.S. in 2009 at St. John Orthodox Cathedral in Eagle River, Alaska. She is a recognized Formation Leader with the National Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
This method has been taught at St. Herman's Seminary, is being taught to students at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary this spring, and has been presented to seminarian wives at St. Vladimir's Seminary. It is endorsed by His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph (Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America) and His Grace Bishop David of Sitka and Alaska (OCA).
