Monastery of Saint John and the OCA Diaconal Vocations Program present:

The Revelation of St. John: An Icon of Liturgy

Join Fr. George Gray as he helps us unlock some of the doors of the mystical and fascinating biblical icon of the Liturgy — the Book of Revelation. Despite the fact that the Book of Revelation is never appointed as a Reading at any of our Divine Services, much of our liturgical language and ritual is embedded in the Johannine Apocalypse. Whether it is the worship of the Tabernacle in the Wilderness and the Temple in Jerusalem or the Christian liturgy from the first century through twenty-first century, "The Revelation to John” has many doors that await opening…

About the speaker:

Fr. George Gray is Rector of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Portland, Oregon, where he’s been since Pascha of 1982. In addition to his Master of Divinity Degree from St. Vladimir’s Seminary, Fr. George has a Master of Arts degree from Mount Angel Seminary (where his thesis was “The Johannine Apocalypse as Liturgical Icon”). Fr. George teaches in the Theology Department of the University of Portland (Introduction to Christian Theology; Old Testament / New Testament Survey; etc.) as well as in the Humanities Department at Portland Community College (World Religions). In addition to his college and university teaching, he has been an instructor for the Diaconal Vocations Program of the OCA since 1997. Fr. George authored the study notes for the Book of Revelation in The Orthodox Study Bible, is the author of Portraits of American Saints and is currently working on a book that compares and contrasts the lives of St. Damien of Molokai and St. Herman of Alaska. Fr. George’s wife Daria is a speech therapist. His son Kyrion serves in the Coast Guard and is an Emergency Medical Technician.
